The most prestigious horse competition in the world, this sprawling event is held every four years, structured to fall between the Olympic Games and governed by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI). Contestants from all over the world compete in 8 different types of events, or "Disciples", to take home top honors.
Dressage means "training" in French, and the objective of this event is to study the horse's behavior when performing a number of simple exercises. The winner in this event will be a horse that's calm, supple, loose, and flexible, but also confident, attractive, and keen, with a perfect harmony with his rider.
There are 3 main categories of competition, including the Grand Prix, the Grand Prix Special, and Freestyle. In each of these, horse and rider perform a combination of moves and gaits designed to test the qualities listed above and determine level of achievement. But in the popular freestyle category, these required moves are choreographed to music and other moves by the rider, according to their specific musical and artistic goals.
Five judges oversee the competition and mark the results of each test independently of one another, and the horse with the highest score is the winner!
In the Driving Competition, each driver handles a set of four horses through the three competitions of the event: Driven Dressage, Marathon, and Obstacle Cones.
In Driven Dressage, all teams are judged on certain qualities, such as freedom, regularity of paces, impulsion, harmony, suppleness, lightness, etc. There's also general judging on control of the horses, condition of the saddle, and the overall presentation.
In the exciting Marathon event, the driver navigates a course across country and tests the fitness, stamina, and training of the horses, as well as the driving skills and general horsemanship of the competitor. The sprawling course is split up into 3 sections and is around 18 km long.
The climactic final section includes 8 marked obstacles that must be expertly navigated, and in the final competition, the Obstacle Cone course, the competitor must drive his team through a twisting course of cones set close together with balls balanced on top. Knocking a ball off or going over time incurs penalties. This tests the obedience, fitness, and suppleness of the horses after the Marathon, as well as the driving and overall skill of the competitors.
Final rankings are determined by the team with lowest number of penalties throughout all 3 stages of the competition.
Not surprisingly, the endurance competition is designed to test the speed and endurance abilities of the horse. Horse and driver must navigate a massive 100 mile course with five stops along the way for veterinarians to check and make sure the horse is fit enough to continue. The race is against the clock, for the competitor who finishes in the shortest time takes home the win.
A general, overall competition of horse and rider, this event spans 3 days, each day with its distinct test, and the driver will ride the same horse throughout all 3 days. The tests are Dressage, Cross Country, and Jumping. Dressage will test performance, training, and horse behavior; Cross Country tests horse endurance, obedience, and driving skill; and Jumping will complete the competition by testing the horse's jumping ability and willingness to continue after 2 previous days of hard work.
Jumping is an excellent way to demonstrate the horse's freedom, energy, skill, speed, and obedience as well as the rider's showmanship and level of control over the animal. The team must navigate a course full of obstacles, and penalties are incurred for going over time, knocking over an obstacle, or the horse and/or driver refusing to complete an obstacle. The team with the fewest points wins!
This brand new competition is specifically designed for riders with physical disabilities and provides them the opportunity to compete in a high performance equestrian sport alongside able-bodied riders from all over the world.
The Reining event is designed to showcase and test the athletic ability of a western type horse in a show arena. Competitors are required to run one of several approved patterns. Each pattern will test horse and driver's reining abilities and includes slow small circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, 360 spins done in place, and exciting sliding stops. Judges will award points to each competitor and the highest point value wins.
The popular vaulting competition requires great discipline, harmony between horse and rider, and outstanding physical condition from the rider. Vaulting covers a wide variety of events and styles, including individuals, pairs, and teams. Using the moving horse as a base, riders perform gymnastic type moves on the back of the horse, creating elaborate pyramids and poses and also different methods of mounting and dismounting.
Riders perform 2 rounds of routines, Compulsory and Freestyle. During Compulsory tests, vaulters must perform several designated exercises that are scored on a scale of 1 to 10. The freestyle tests are performed to music and feature very unique and artistic choreography and moves. Each vaulter choreographs a routine to music of his or her choice.
Judging of this event is based on form, technique, difficulty, balance, security, and consideration of the horse. The horse is a critical aspect of scoring, having an influence of up to 20%, as it must be a consummate athlete with good character, temperament, and balance. The horse is guided by a longeur who must ensure a good, steady canter is always maintained while the vaulter performs.
